Drs. Wilkinson and Chernova Become MilliPub Club Members
Dr. Keith D. Wilkinson, Professor in Biochemistry and Director of The Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences (GDBBS), and Dr. Tatiana Chernova, Assistant Professor in Biochemistry, have been inducted into the MilliPub Club. The MilliPub Club honors and recognizes current Emory faculty who have published one or more individual papers throughout their careers that have each garnered more than 1000 citations. Such a paper is commonly considered a “citation classic” and represents high impact scholarship.
Their article, "The Ubiquitin Pathway in Parkinson's Disease," appeared in Nature in 1998. Dr. Wilkinson describes the article:
"A large proportion of neurodegenerative diseases arise from defects in protein folding leading to protein aggregation. Effective clearing of these aggregates is vital. This paper was one of the first to show a linkage between enzymes of the ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) and Parkinson’s disease. It is now well established that a host of defects in the UPS contribute to Alzheimers’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, ALS, prion diseases, Spinal Cerebellar Ataxia, and motor neuron disease."
