Sushma Timalsina
Program: Microbiology and Molecular Genetics
Faculty Advisor: David S. Weiss, PhD
Sushma received her B.Tech in Biotechnology from Kathmandu University, Nepal and M.S in Cellular and Molecular Biology from University of New Haven, CT. She worked on both academic and industrial research before moving to Emory in 2022 to start her PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics (MMG). At Emory, she joined Dr. David Weiss’s lab where her research focuses on identifying novel mechanisms of antibacterial resistance posed by clinically relevant bacteria. She utilizes both computational and wet lab skills to uncover potential ways bacteria can generate mutations to evade antibiotic treatment. The ultimate goal of her project is to broaden existing knowledge on molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, which may aid in development of novel class of antibiotics to treat bacterial infection in clinic.
