Maria is a Ph.D. student in the GMB program at Emory University and joined the lab in the spring of 2025. She earned her B.S. in Biological Sciences with a minor in Chemistry from Florida International University in 2023. She then completed a post-baccalaureate program at Boston University, where she studied the role of DNA damage factors in HIV-1 integration. Her current research interests are focused on understanding the role of DNA topology in enzymatic interactions, particularly with integrases. Other interests include chromatin structure and transcriptional regulation.

Maria grew up in Mexico City and moved to Florida when she was 17. She is a first-generation graduate student, and outside of the lab enjoys listening to music, trying different foods, and always has an art project in progress.
